E is for Escaflowne [Oct. 5th, 2006|11:11 pm]
Anime In Depth

[mood |accomplished]

Despite the fact I haven’t seen the full series yet (only 18 of the 26 eps), I’m going to attempt to tell about Escaflowne, also known as Vision of Escaflowne. As I suck at summaries, I copied the next part from Anime News Network:

High school student Hitomi is transported from Earth to the magical world of Gaea, where she meets boy prince Van Fanel, and is caught up in his quest to unite the countries of Gaea against the ominous Zaibach empire. On the way, she discovers an hidden ability and strives to unravel layers of mystery surrounding Van, his past, and the giant machine known as Escaflowne.

First of all, if you wanna get an idea of these series, the main weapons they use in this world are Guymelefs (spelling may be wrong), which is basically a Gundam like machine, but different. In a way they are less advanced, but they also have stuff like cloaking devices. Seems to be a mix of steam/weels technique with some magic like fuel (dragon heart).

In this whole story, it focusses so far on 3 characters. There is Hitomi, who is your usual earth high school girl, who seems to like sports (judging on the first ep), but also likes to ‘predict’ the future of friends and such with tarot cards. Also, she has this pendant from her grandmother, which has some mysterious powers from time to time. The exact role is slowly revealed by now, but so far it acts pretty random or when Hitomi focusses on it.

Now, Hitomi is just plain annoying. Later on, she gets random visions, mainly about disasters, making her freak out big time. The way she acts is just…meh. Also, she can’t seem to decide who she likes better. The guy back on earth, Van or Allen Schezar. Honestly, make up your mind girl! I don’t like girls who freak and scream the whole time, period.

Then there is Van, who oddly reminds me of Heero from Gundam Wing (and yes, there are actually GW/Esca fics out there by people who also noticed the similar looks and made crossover fics about it). While he’s pretty much a reserved person at first, Hitomi seems to make him open up a bit, accepting peoples help, getting some sense in his head (one of the few good things she has done). His past is quite cool (don’t wanna spoil it really) and a tad tragic, as it concerns an older brother who joined Zaibach, aka the bad guys.

Last is Allen, a knight who joins Hitomi and Van (along with his group of fellow fighter guys, almost pirate like). His past just got revealed and is even more tragic than Van’s past. Vision of Escaflowne seems to give all the characters a dramatic story… Basically a father who left him and his mother to chase after a big mystery for money, him becoming a bratty teen fighting everyone as a result, till a king found and beat him in a fight, getting him back on the right track and eventually making him a knight. Then he got a love affair with the princess (daughter of the king, though noone ever found out, it seems) and possibly a kid with her too, before she married a king from another kingdom.

Now, the biggest issue about Escaflowne is that it simply is too confusing. I’m watching the whole DVD set with a friend of mine, and we both are very confused about what exactly is going on. We get the main idea, but they keep adding so much stuff, that we lost track of it. Looks like we have to rewatch all eps several times to understand it completely.

Though the really biggest issue is the drawing style. Their noses are huge!!! Very pointy and all and sometimes even deformed. Still not used to it…makes us wince everytime it happens from certain angles.

And the biggest mystery so far is the gender of one of the characters, a bad guy to be exactly, named Dilandau. Not only is he/she very scary, crazy and sadistic, but nothing really reveals his/her gender (not voice, no decent views on chest either). Friend who let us borrow the first dvd said something about it being some plot twist in the future…so only time will know, I guess. Darn you Japanese voice actor :P If any of you have seen it, no spoiling please.

So yeah, my attempt to write something about Escaflowne. Sorry for the delay, peeps.

EDIT: Watched the remaining 8 eps and I feel like adjusting my semi-negative opinion about the series.

For one, in the end, some of the stuff that confused me made sense now. Also, Dilandau's gender issue was one heck of an unexpected plot twist. Me and my friend thought we knew the gender at some point, but in the end, it turned out to be way more complicated.

However, I wasn't really satisfied with the ending. Especially concerning a certain pairing. But I guess that's just my own silly opinion.

Overall rating: Nice anime, though a tad confusing and some annoying chars, but worth watching :)

D is for Detective Conan [Sep. 27th, 2006|12:25 am]
Anime In Depth

[mood |okayokay]

This is going to be short since I’ve only seen the first 9 episodes (won the DVDs in a costume contest). ^_^; But after checking a list of anime titles, Detective Conan seems to be the only “D” anime I’ve seen a bit of.

Detective Conan begins with Shinichi, a teenaged detective. While investigating a case at an amusement park, he’s attacked by two gangsters who feed him an experimental poison with the belief that it should kill him. However, the substance doesn’t work as expected and shrinks Shinichi into a little kid instead. Worried that the gangsters would try to kill him again or harm others close to him if they find out he’s alive, Shinichi takes on the alias of Conan to disguise his true identity.

As he gets used to his new body, he continues working on mysteries with the hope that he can track down the men who gave him the poison and find an antidote. In the part of the series that I saw, Conan did succeed in solving several cases but did not have any luck finding the gangsters.

Although I usually like mysteries and there are some clever twists, I have to admit this series didn’t really grab me because it seems mostly episodic and I tend to prefer anime with ongoing plots that play out over the course of the series. ^_^;;;

A for Astro Boy! [Sep. 22nd, 2006|10:49 pm]
Anime In Depth

[mood |cheerfulcheerful]
[music |Ballad of a Fallen Angel---Cowboy Bebop]

At first I didn't know if I could even come up with an A anime that I've watched. I went through a long list at the Anime News Network, and finally found this.

I've never seen the vintage version, but during its' remake's brief tenure on KidsWB, I watched it. It was kinda like the original Megaman games in a way, I guess (though I know Astro Boy came first). It's about a robot that has a personality. The man who keeps him (who isn't his original creator) thinks of him as a son, and the robot (Astro Boy, of course) goes around trying to help people.

He wants to have peace between humans and robots, but some humans and even some robots don't want that. He hates having to fight others, but if it comes down to it, he will in order to protect people.

Astro Boy's past is mysterious. He has fleeting memories of another time in his life, when he was called by another name. I am unsure whether Astro Boy was once a human, or whether the memories are just from a time when he was a different robot (or whether Astro Boy is a robot, but with a human heart/soul). The few episodes I saw were very vague on those points, though I do know that he was created as a replacement for the creator's dead son. And I do remember, very vaguely, them talking often about Astro Boy's "kokoro", but for the life of me I can't remember more than that. It's been several years since I've seen it.

At any rate, he is almost human. I love the show because of how it touches on deep topics such as What makes someone human, while keeping things simple. I dunno, it's simple and deep at the same time, like so many anime series are.

There's a boxset available of all of the remake's episodes. One of these days I want to get it and watch this show all the way through. It definitely had potential, and I was disappointed and confused that KidsWB didn't keep it!

F is for Full Moon Wo Sagashite [Sep. 22nd, 2006|10:29 pm]

[music |Myself-Full Moon]

I chose to do Full Moon Wo Sagashite because even though I could've done FUll Metal Alchemist or Full Metal Panic, I didn't want to be too obvious!

Full Moon is about a girl named Mitsuki who has throat tumor. One day, after being told by her doctor she couldn't go to a singing audition because of her tumor, she meets two Shinigami named Takuto Kira and Mereko. They inform Mitsuki that she only has one year to live. Knowing this, the girl hurries off to try and auditon anyway, only to find out that she needed to be sixteen. Takuto then makes a deal with her, that if they help her dream come true by her time to go, then she would have to go with them quietly. As the deal is sealed, Takuto gives Mitsuki a special pill that allows him to transform her into her sixteen year old form, which she calls Full Moon.

The best thing about the show is its endearing quality, and how it deals with the choices we make in our life. It basically asks you, "IF you only had a certain amount of time to live, what would you do with it?" In Mitsuki's case, her dream was to sing. And she wanted it badly. That is my reasoning for why Takuto broke the rules of a shinigami, and helped her with magic and all that.

What I don't like about this show so far is the dub version. Now, you all know me. I am not a huge basher of dubs. I've only found one or two that I liked in Japanese better. Full Moon wo Sagashite was introduced to me Japanese, and I guess that can make all the difference in some cases. However, the series is finally reaching a wider audience, and I will gladly receive any fellow Full Moon fans, whether they be fans of the Jap, dub, or manga. I will say this about the dub on two positive notes, however. Excellent voice cast, especially for Takuto. And I am glad that they kept the Japanese music and didn't attempt to change it into English. The original Japanese music is great!

Anime In Depth

Hey everyone! Well, it looks like we got off to a good start last week! Great! Now, I want to introduce to you the next level of the ABC game! Anime from A-Z! In this version of our popular game, you'll be asked to write a short summary of an anime that you have SEEN that starts with your letter. If you get a letter and you ahve not seen an anime that starts with it, you may choose to do a character from another anime. But the idea is to see what we're watching and to find out if we truly are watching animes from A to Z!!

D-Lady of the Thread

For this game, I'd like to see everyone write a seperate entry. Only reply to this if you have questions, or are intending to usea character. Thanks!!!

In the Last four months what sort of animes have you been watching, and what have you enjoyed most about them? What do you like least about them?

Have fun with this everyone. It's not a college essay, you know!! hehe

Anime Review: Rune Soldier Louie [May. 18th, 2006|09:41 am]
Anime In Depth

Hey, everyone. Since Co-chan (SK for those of you who don't know who that is) has let this group fall into hibernation, I thought I'd bring it back by discussing a new anime my boyfriend's brother got me into recently, called Rune Soldier Louie. This show...it's a combination of Saiyuki, .Hack Sign and...Magic Knight Rayearth, in my opinion. Louie, the title character really reminds me a lot of Gojyo. I had to make sure it wasn't Illich doing his voice, because it sounded a lot like him. Creepy, ne? Anyway, it's about a band of RPG characters that need a magician to help them continue their quest. They run into Louie each of them on separate occasions, citing him to be pervert, even after he randomly saved them on those occassions.

As it turns out, Louie is the only magician even remotely capable of fulfilling the task they need in order to continues, and he's not even that experienced! This show is a lot of fun. And I am antsy to see more of it. Well, I gotta go. I'll talk to you guys later.

N is for.... [Feb. 1st, 2006|09:42 pm]
Anime In Depth

[mood |happyhappy]

I decided it was time to do my N post. XD; I was having trouble thinking of an N character, but then I remembered one and found that he hadn't been used. ^^

Image hosting by Photobucket This is Nephrite/Nephlite/Neflyte from Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon. ^^ I prefer the last spelling, so I will use that (even though the first is the original). He is the second of the four Generals/Kings belonging to the Dark Kingdom. (I did the first one, Jadeite, a long time ago.)

In the manga, it's explained that Neflyte and the other three served as Prince Endymion's (Mamoru in a past life) protectors, until Queen Beryl took and brainwashed them to work for her. They have no memories of their times spent as protectors, at least not at first, and in the anime this angle, sadly, either does not exist or it simply was not explored. In the anime, the Generals seem to not even be human, as their blood is green. o.o;

Anyway, Neflyte is assigned to gather energy from humans (I think, it's been a while since I saw the first arc) and to find the Imperium Silver Crystal, which is residing inside someone. He relies on the stars for his powers and Zoycite is insanely jealous of him, as she/he (another dub gender change character) wanted to be the one chosen to do the stuff. So she's always hanging around bothering him at the abandoned mansion he stays in.

He's also taken up an alias as a businessman named Maxfield Stanton (sorry, I don't know the Japanese name here) and unfortunately for Usagi, her best fried Naru/Molly falls in love with him and he starts to manipulate her without her realizing it. So Usagi is in a predicament not knowing what to do, because she knows Neflyte's true identity, but if she reveals it to Molly, she probably won't believe it, and at any rate, it will expose Usagi as Sailor Moon. She does try to tell her that Maxfield Stanton isn't good for her, but Molly refuses to believe it.

To make a long story short, one time the Senshi are having a confrontation with Neflyte and it's to the point where Sailor Moon can kill him ... until Molly jumps in the way. This stuns Neflyte and he begins to wonder what true love really is like. He has never really believed in himself, and yet Molly does, insisting that there is good within him even after discovering his true identity. He struggles with this for a while, wondering if it's right for him to use Molly, and Zoycite notices. Deciding that perhaps Neflyte is having doubts about using Molly, Zoycite has some of her minions abduct her. She intends for him to kill Neflyte so that Zoycite can take over. But Neflyte manages to defeat them and escapes with Molly.

They talk for a while, and Neflyte actually seems to relax a bit, seeming to enjoy the break from all the chaos and the treachery of the Dark Kingdom. Then Zoycite and her minions attack again. In the end, Neflyte is fatally wounded when he tries to protect Molly. The Senshi came to help fight, but they weren't quick enough. Neflyte tells Sailor Moon that her identity won't leak out (as he had found out she is Usagi) and then tells Molly that he's sorry for lying to her once again, as they won't be able to get the chocolate parfait they had been talking about. His body fades away while Molly kneels on the grass, weeping.

Neflyte is one of my favorites of the Generals. He's a fascinating, complex character, one of the kind who does indeed turn out to have goodness even though initially he seems completely bad. And I'm a sucker for characters who sacrifice themselves for others. XD;
